SLO Train Day

by on May.13, 2017, under Amtrak, Friends-SMVRR, SLORRM, SMVRR

Probably the 2nd largest day at the SLO Railroad Museum (behind the Central Coast Railroad Festival, perhaps). Lots of activities and people. Notables this year included a new exhibit opening of the Santa Maria Valley Railroad, a presentation by Cindy Ransick about the new book Historic Santa Maria Valley, an Amtrak talk by Dave Weisman, and considerable progress on the Museum’s model railroad.

Great Lodges by Train

by on Aug.31, 2016, under Amtrak

The four of us took a fantastic trip to Great Lodges of the northwest this August. We road Amtrak’s Coast Starlight to Klamath Falls where we got off and headed over to Oregon Caverns. Then north to Mount Hood and Mount Rainer. We boarded the Starlight in Seattle for the return home. All the photos (lots).

Central Coast Railroad Festival

by on Oct.08, 2015, under Amtrak, CCRRF, PCRR, SLORRM, SMVRR, UPRR

I gave a talk on the SMVRR at the SLO Railroad Museum on Saturday morning. I also gave a talk Thursday evening at the SLO Library entitled “Railroading Galore in the Greater SLO Area” (PDF of the slides). All the photos, schedule, etc. are still available at the CCRRF website. I particularly enjoyed the participation by the Jack House and the SLO History Center.

Portland Business Excursion

by on Jul.12, 2015, under Amtrak, SMVRR

Lynn and I joined Santa Maria Valley Railroad officers and investors on a business excursion to Portland, Oregon aboard the Tioga Pass and the Pacific Sands (behind Amtrak’s Coast Starlight). The trip included at stop at George Lavacot’s place to see the SMV #205 nearing completion. They steamed it up this past January for the first time since 1950. Huntington Excursion

by on Aug.31, 2014, under Amtrak, SMVRR, UPRR

Lynn and I thoroughly enjoyed a fabulous Labor Day weekend excursion aboard the private railcar Silver Lariat and exploring the Huntington Library and Gardens in Pasadena. It was a business excursion for the Santa Maria Valley Railroad, which also explains why the Huntington was the destination – as in Henry Huntington, railroad baron. It’s the sort of place where you could spend a week and still not do it justice. Below are a smattering of pics from the trip. We stayed at the the Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena; this place is a story on its own. If you’re interested in seeing the entire gallery of photos, just let me know.
