Palmer Lake and The Joint Line

by on Jun.19, 2020, under Colorado

I’ve spent a couple days now with Matteo and AJ fishing at Palmer Lake. Myself, I’ve been chillin’. The spot is an interesting railroad location. It’s along The Joint Line (history). The UP side (pictured here) is used southbound and runs along the west side of the lake. The BNSF side used to run along the east side of the lake but has since been moved further east and out of site of lake visitors. The lines were originally run by the lake for the water supply (for steam locos).

From the pedestrian bridge connecting the City of Palmer Lake’s downtown to Palmer Lake.
Southbound unit train of coal. On the UP side of The Joint Line.
D&RGW last owned this right-of-way in 1988. That’s when it merged with the Southern Pacific and then later SPRR merged with the Union Pacific.
Looking southwest. One of the boys’ ball fields is just on the other side of the train, left of center.

Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad

by on Sep.04, 2019, under Colorado

Upon arrival into Cripple Creek, we went directly to the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad for a 40-minute round trip out toward the gold mining areas and back. Live steam, coal fired! Had a great time in Cripple Creek, here’s the whole story. All the photos are here: Cripple Creek, and Victor.
